Laticastelli was originally a castle built in the thirteenth century that was destroyed and rebuilt as a farm and winery.
Finally it turned into a small medieval village that, reconstructed as a Country Relais, maintains its original charm and character. The old cellars of the winery were recycled into LA TAVERNA.
Laticastelli is a secluded and quiet place
Perched on a hill with a beautiful road of cypresses, an impressive view of the surrounding countryside, the village main street leads to a park with cedars and flowers.
At the bottom of valley, close to the river Ombrone that limits the 50 hectares property, there is a polo field; farther away olive trees, vineyards and grain fields. The woods with winding paths make it an ideal place to ride, walk or just relax.
Laticastelli originally was a castle built at the beginning of the XIII th. Century.
Together with ARMAIOLO, it was part of a series of outlying fortresses that protected the south of Siena. The location was initially selected as a camp site by the Romans traveling from Siena to the baths in Rapolano Terme. On the old maps, the original road to Siena runs alongside the Ombrone River.
During centuries Siena waged and won many wars against Florence, but when Siena was finally defeated, in revenge the Florentines destroyed all the fortifications that protected the city, amongst them Laticastelli.
Centuries later it was rebuilt as a farm and winery part of a large estate of more than a thousand hectares, with its own vineyards, agriculture, olive groves, flour mill, cattle, etc. The estate prospered economically and eventually became a small village with its own local government. All this evolution can be clearly seen in the different buildings, from the ruins of the castle to the community hall.
Over the years the owners sold off most of the land and finally the property was abandoned for more than twenty years before reconstruction was started.
LATI, in the name LATICASTELLI, referred to the ample view of all the landscape around the castle.
Today this view of the lovely landscape provides an ideal environment for the Country Relais
